The Transformers movies were based on the TV series which aired between 1984 and 1987, which is also based on the comic book series which was first published  between 1984 to 1991, and which ran for 80 issues. The comic was originally meant to be a 4-issue limited series, but was extended to 80 issues before being cancelled.

The Transformers are two races of sentient robots. – The Autobots and Decepticons. They came from a planet called Cybertron which was destroyed by the evil Decepticons.  They are robots that can transform into any shape they scan – for them vehicles were the most logical choice.
